Understanding the different types of hotel key cards available helps property managers choose the right system for their needs.
RFID hotel key cards are the most widely used technology in modern hotel properties. RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification, and these cards communicate with the door lock wirelessly when held close to the reader. They do not require physical contact or swiping, which makes them faster and more convenient for guests to use.
Magnetic stripe hotel key cards have been a hospitality standard for many years and remain in use across a large number of properties globally. These cards contain a magnetic strip on the back that stores the guest’s room access data. They are cost-effective and straightforward to programme at the front desk.
Smart card hotel key cards use an embedded microchip that stores more data than a magnetic stripe and offers a higher level of security. These are increasingly common in upscale hotel environments where integrated access to multiple areas, such as the gym, spa, parking, or executive lounge, is required from a single card.
Mobile-based access, where a guest’s smartphone replaces a physical card entirely, is also growing in adoption. However, physical hotel key cards remain the preferred and most reliable option for the majority of hotel guests and operators.
